curated by Matheson Whiteley: “Wellington is wet and windy with fine, short summers. A
computer controlled green house forms the heart of this house, artificially
extending the summer months. Timber framed boxes scattered around the perimeter
provide spaces with privacy and thermal enclosure. These conceptually nestle
into the ground, sheltering the house from cold southerly winds. The rational, climatic determinism of the Kelly House is
undermined by colored panels along the ridgeline. These decorative elements
recall ecclesiastical architecture, but with a strange, sun worshiping liturgy
drawn from the hedonistic engagement of comfort and nature – in place of the
altar, an octagonal hot tub.” (Text: Jason Whiteley. Photos: © Nigel Cook Architects, Euan Sarginson / New
