Whiteley: “A marble stream harks back to the cracked façade of Hans Hollein’s Schullin
jewelry store; the cranked metal roof to Frank Gehry’s Santa Monica House. But
this is more beachcomber architecture than a knowing take on International
Postmodernism. Timber casements and steel girders were scavenged from
reclaimer’s yards, then artfully composed inside a stage set of clapboard, unpainted
block and galvanized sheeting. The roof is a direct and acknowledged crib of
Carlaw Park – a football stadium – though the basis for this, as with much of
Lane’s work, remains under-examined. Machismo from without, the spaces within
are varied in scale and surprisingly intimate.” (Text: Giles Reid. Photos: © Ted Baghurst, Auckland Architecture Association,
