Whiteley: “Five monolithic blocks descend the slope of Mount Victoria, overlooking
Wellington harbor. They form a series of platforms linked together to form a
house and separate studio/guest suite. Hermetic and mysterious from the harbor,
extensive glazing to the north creates a surprising openness from inside. The Kelly House shares formal similarities with Rewi Thompson’s house, but here
the architecture derives its logic from geotechnical bravado, continuing a
Wellington tradition of daring infill houses perched on seemingly impossible
sites – at once looking to the view, while bracing themselves against difficult
weather.” (Text: Jason Whiteley. Photos: © Patrick Reynolds, Architecture Workshop .)
