Hans Zimmermann, Stuttgart-Degerloch, Germany, 1926-27
OfHouses guest curated by AMUNT : ”The “black house” was designed for Dr.
Schottländer in 1926 by the rather unknown Stuttgart-based architect Hans
Zimmermann using a prefabrication system from the company Christoph &
Unmack AG in Niesky. That same year, the company hired the young Konrad
Wachsmann as their chief architect. In the following years Wachsmann designed
several houses, amongst them the director’s house, today better known as the
Wachsmann House, in Niesky and the Einstein House in Caputh. For this reason it
has been assumed for some time that Wachsmann was also the architect of the “black
house”. The
broad, white-painted roof overhang of the Schottländer House hides the
low-angled hip roof above and gives the house its characteristic appearance –
half modern and half something else. It is this transitional quality that gives
the house, even nowadays, a contemporary look.” (Photos: © AMUNT, Zimmermann Archive.)
