was born in Austria, and emigrated to England in 1938 after the
Anschluss. Despite being a Jewish refugee, he was interned by the
British on the Isle of Man and later sent to Quebec. After his release,
he studied architecture in Canada, and later studied at the Harvard GSD
under Gropius and Black Mountain College with Albers, part of a long
itinerary that also brought him to New York to work for Marcel Breuer
and Rio to work for Niemeyer. He settled in Australia after his parents
moved there and commissioned him to design their house, which led to
other commissions, including this house, the second built project that
